The Story so Far ...

Cornu witnesses the Old King’s death and discovers Lucifer’s dark intentions. Following the death of his parents, he flees with Edge to the mainland to start a new life. Edge has other plans as he convinces Cornu to return home and visit Adora who's just become Head of the Courts. Things don't quite go to plan, as they discover Adora's engaged to the Oro Captain, Rodrigo, spoiling Edge's ideal reunion for the lovebirds - but not only that - at the dinner celebrating her promotion, Adora will be sat next to Lucifer himself!

Originally, Panel 2 felt empty without a background.

But when I added it, something felt off—Adora should still be standing there.

To fix this, I repurposed her flats from Panel 1, turning it into a silhouette.

It’s quick and completes the panel.

A visualisation of my internet stopping me from uploading my comic.

(We had our internet checked this morning so I thought it would work but nah, not yet.)

It’s on it’s way!

The only thing standing in my way is that my internet’s upload speed has decided to tank 😬 so that may delay me slightly but hoping it’ll be sorted soon 🤞

Also I thought it might be cute and more interesting to colour one panel per update for these promo images, even if the comic itself is in black/white. Just makes it prettier.

(I miss having the comic in full colour but b/w is so much faster)

Only got one more page to go for the next update, so it will be out in the next week or two (I need some time to make sure I don’t have typos and final adjustments) 👀 So not long to go.

I am hopeful that I’ll have the rest of the chapter mostly done by the end of the month. 🤞

Alphabet Superset: Z for Zoom Out (The End!)

No lore, just a map and an approximation of how I think their ‘Earth’ looks from space.

Feels weird to have completed this project, I started back in September and somehow managed to stay on track throughout.

For those that followed along, I hope you enjoyed it!

These were really fun to put together, even when I was stressing about how the hell I was going to make a comic about some of the topics. I changed several of them on the fly, and figuring the square-page ratio was always a challenge but it was always worth it. Not only for the comics themselves but the ideas I had while making them - seriously, the notes from this project severely outweigh the final results - and despite my issues with the square-format, it really pushed me to be more creative with my page layouts.

Big thanks to @struthless69 who came up with this Alphabet Superset challenge in the first place. It’s been a fun ride, and I may revisit the idea down the line.

Alphabet Superset: Y for Yacht

Note on the ‘irate masters’ line: “masters” is referring to the harbour master (the one in charge of the docks). I did include a visual hint to that in the comic but I just wanted to be clear on what that line actually means. ‘Masters’ also works as a play on ‘mast’ and its bounces - sound-wise - like ‘sailors’. Putting this out there, because I know it’s common for there to be slavery in fantasy worlds, and I want to make it clear that this isn’t the case in Regno. (It has other issues, but that’s not one of them.)

For this comic, I was channeling some sort of nonsense poem vibes for this one because I had no brain to make sensical words happen. If you know anything about poetry … forgive me. This truly was just some nonsense that’s pretending to be world-building. On the art side: It may be wonky, but I’m quite proud that I drew a fairly decent port. The fact that it’s two panels is a bit lost because toning it with hatching might have muddled the clarity. One day I might revisit these and add colour or tone.

So technically speaking, most of the ships in the Regno docks would mainly be for trading purposes not yachts for the rich. The people of Regno haven’t really had time to relax long enough to really give it a go. For anyone wondering why there’s sea trade at another point, it’s mainly because trading via Oro and Pescamare (see: V for Village) can be expensive and rather out-of-the-way.

I have to say it: I AM SO NEARLY DONE!! Z is next week, then I’ll have completed the set and have 26 mini comics to look back on. Plus a heck-ton of notes. I’d like to do something with this project afterwards, like make a PDF for people to download and stuff. If people are interested, let me know!

Alphabet Superset: X for X-Ray

Are X-rays possible in Regno?
Surprisingly, yes. They are possible, just not in the real-world sense.

I did a little reading on X-rays for this, which had no real effect on anything I wrote for this other than my brain asking silly questions. “Does magic count as radiation? It comes from the sun, but is it the same kind of radiation as X-rays??” Like honestly, it’s impossible to answer because I’m not a scientist and this is fiction. I’m not sure we can compare my magic system too closely to anything in the real world or it’ll fall apart super quickly.

Suspension of disbelief is important here!

Anyway, this got a heck ton easier when I realised this was the perfect excuse to talk about magical healing. Some extra lore for those interested: Yes you can still have scars after magical healing, but the chances of you having them (especially obvious scars) are reduced. In my mind the magical healing works like the magic telling to body to return to it’s previous/original state. There is also repair magic that works in a similar way, Cornu’s very good at it.

This was another subject that was kinder hard to turn into a comic, but it’s a good excuse to experiment with more open, flowy page layouts. These tend to be my favourite kinds of pages work on in my main comic because it’s a nice break from 3-5 panel pages. (They can also be fun, but sometimes you have to hold back so the right pages have the right impact.)

And shoutout to the skeleton who helped frame the page and gave me an excuse to get some anatomy practice in.

Alphabet Superset: W for Wildlife

Bonus points to anyone who remembered the “swarm of bears” comment from the B comic!

I am aware that in real life, bears tend to be solitary animals, but in Regno they pack together. It makes for an absolutely terrifying image. (Don’t be fooled by their friend-shape.)

There are other animals in Regno, like foxes, wolves, various birds and fish (typically sea or river fish) but I can only fit so many onto one page. This comic was a good excuse to practice drawing animals which I don’t do a ton so it was a nice change of pace.

Next week’s theme is X-rays, so now I must ponder the magic system’s healing capabilities …

Alphabet Superset: V for Village by the Sea

Pescamare, despite being the first location I ever came up with for Regno way back in 2011, has ended up being the last one to be featured in this mini comic series. As the comic says, it’s the closest to Oro and it is very much a busy hub for trade and some sea fishing - which for anyone who knows any Italian would be able to guess from the name Pesca-mare which can translate to Sea Fishing, or apparently, since I just ran it through a translator, it is actually the word for Fishmonger as well. (Happy coincidence. I just slammed two words together that were seaside related.)

Etymology aside, the aspect of this village that has been there since the beginning is the “fight club” that the children of the village partake in every year. With all the trade going on, kids games and running around would get in the way, so the kids hang around the old barn and - in true Regno soldiering tradition - try to win in organised brawls. They are separated by age, and there are strict rules on no bloodshed or severe injuries, it’s closer to wrestling/sparring than actual brawling. The winner gets bragging rights, and I suspect the adults don’t intervene because they took part in the same tradition. It’s like a violent sports day.

I sometimes wonder why I kept this in the lore, other than explaining the term “Pescamarian Brawlers” but it dawned on me that the years of constant war would have resulted in children being raised to fight or to support the fight. What with the people of Pescamare being direct descendants from the original Oro soldiers, I guess it makes sense that there would be a lot of combat in this little village.

The trade on the other hand, just makes sense because they are the closest to the wealthiest part of the kingdom so they’ve become the ‘middleman’ between Oro and Città for trading and they double as a ferrying service.

Alphabet Superset: U for Underground Caverns

I’m happy with the layout for this one but I’m not sure the reading order is clear when you see the whole page. If I were working with regular page proportions I think it would have been clearer because I could have them descend down more clearly.

There isn’t much more lore to share here, although I do think there is actually magic underground but you would have to go even further down than these caves to find it. Also I didn’t have enough space to write that there was a prison in one of the easier to access caves for detaining the mentioned prisoners and criminals with more powerful magic.

I’m VERY close to the end of this challenge now! Only 5 more comics to go 👀

I did the famous Blender Doughnut tutorial!

My computer could not physically handle exporting the animation at a higher res … so just look past that. I had a lot of fun working on this and learning how to composite and animate a bit in Blender, even if it was just panning the camera around.

Credits:
The tutorial was by Blender Guru on Youtube.

The models of the chopping board/food, plant, wooden utensils and their respective vases were models from Poliigon. Plus the marble texture used for the countertop.

Alphabet Superset: T for Temple

I was too brain dead this week to make a more complicated comic. Also sorry if the wording sounds a little cult-like 😂 I was really struggling to make words happen.

The temples in Regno aren’t frequented much in all honesty. There are two major ones, one on Oro (pictured here) and one on the mainland, the latter being the least visited because it’s got its own spot of land.

The rest are all scattered around both the cities and they are considerably smaller than the main temples. While the big two would each have a small group of clergy (or equivalents) looking after them, the smaller ones would maybe have one or two people looking after them.

For anyone keeping up with these comics may remember that the disused temples in Città get used as Heroes Guilds. The active temples are used for meditation mainly, and some festival celebrations take place in them. The main temples also get used for council meetings between the representatives of each settlement. (An idea I forgot while making Chapter 1. 😅)

And yes, I had many thoughts and ideas regarding this topic but just … could not put my braincells together enough to make anything more complicated.

Alphabet Superset: S for Sun (and Moon)

Simple one this week, but it definitely has one of the more unique layouts. Visually speaking at least, it still follows a four panel structure.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever explicitly explained that the symbol in the first panel is the symbol for magic, it can be associated by proxy with the sun but the sun is usually just represented by a standard sun image. ☀️

I wish I could provide deeper lore here but honestly this one’s fairly straight forward. The “magic comes from the sun” is true but I have been thinking that it’s only part of the truth because maybe the Earth’s Core also generates magic … but the people of Regno are unlikely to know about that in their Fantasy-Renaissance.
